LIP TATTOO RESTRICTIONS, DIFFICULTIES & PRE APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

There are certain things which will restrict when or if you can have a lip tattoo done. Please read the information below and get in touch if you need any help.
Contraindications - If any of the following apply, you're not able to have a lip tattoo treatment
▪ If you are a hemophiliac.
▪ If you are under 18 years old - even with parental consent it is illegal in the UK to tattoo someone under the age of 18.
▪ If you are pregnant or breast feeding. Anything you put into your body can be passed onto your baby and opening your skin can result in heightened risk of infection. Pregnancy hormones can also affect the healed result so it's best to wait a couple of months post birth.
▪ If you have active skin cancer, any skin diseases, symptoms, irritation, or inflammation at the time of treatment. Your skin needs to be healthy at your appointment.
▪ If you have keloid scarring in the area or have a tendency to keloid scar.
▪ If you have hyper (over/darker) or hypo (under/lighter) pigmentation in your lips. Working on these areas can actually make it worse.
▪ If you are taking any blood thinning medications or Omega 3 fish oil and Vitamin E supplements.
▪ If you are diabetic and it is not under control. If you are taking medication to control diabetes, a doctors note may be required.
▪ If you have high blood pressure and it is not under control. If you are taking medication to control your blood pressure, a doctors note may be required.
▪ Clients unable to take a break from exercise are not suitable candidates. The aftercare  requires you to stop any vigorous exercise for at least the first 7-14 days.
You can have a lip tattoo but must wait if...
▪ You currently have a coldsore. This must be fully healed before the treatment. If you have EVER had a coldsore you must be prescribed antiviral medication by your GP to take for a few days before and a few days after your your lip treatment. Not doing so can cause an outbreak and the treatment will not work as the pigment won't hold. Once the treatment is complete you can also use a topical coldsore cream to help prevent an outbreak.

▪ You have any kind of sore or open wound on your lip. This must be fully healed before the treatment.
▪ You have very thin lips, you may want to consider having lip filler before having the treatment to make this treatment more visible and effective.
▪ You have just had lip fillers. You must wait 4 weeks for the filler to fully settle and for the lip skin to heal.
▪ Once your treatment is done, you must wait 4 weeks before having lip filler. Having filler after the tattoo can make the tattoo lighter as you're stretching the skin.
▪ You've recently had an intense skin treatment (such as fibroblast) around the lips. You must wait for your skin to heal.
▪ You've recently had Botox around the mouth area. You must wait 4 weeks before having a brow tattoo to allow the Botox to settle.
▪ You've recently had a lip tattoo and want Botox. You must wait 4 weeks before having Botox to allow the skin heal.
▪ You're using Accutane, Isotretinoin, or other strong retinoids. You need to be off this kind of medication for 1 year.
▪ You're undergoing radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Your treatments should have finished prior to your appointment and can only be done with a doctor's note.
Pre appointment information
Please ensure you get your antiviral medication at least 3 days before both of your sessions. This can be purchased through Superdrug Online Doctors or you can visit your GP for a prescription. Around 67% of adults carry the Herpes Simplex virus, so even if you’ve never had a visible cold sore, you may want to purchase the tablets regardless to help prevent an outbreak. A cold sore outbreak after tattooing can be painful and affect the results. Even with medication and creams, they can still occur.

∙ Please keep your lips exfoliated, hydrated and in good condition the week of your appointment.
Dry, chapped lips cannot be tattooed easily and your results will be much better if your lips are soft and in good health.
∙ Please ensure you don't have a dentist app within 2 - 3 weeks of having your lips tattooed in case they feel sensitive & dry.
∙ Please wash your hair before the procedure (to decrease risk of soaking your face during the first few days).
∙ To reduce bleeding, no alcohol, coffee or energy drinks on the day of your appointment.
∙ To reduce bleeding, no alcohol, niacin, aspirin or ibuprofen for 24 hours before your treatment.
∙ To reduce bleeding, do not have any fish oil supplements or vitamin E for 1 week before the treatment.
∙ Once your lip blush has been done, swelling and bruising can be present for several days after and is very common.
You can help the bruising and swelling by using ice packs, sleeping slightly upright and by taking antihistamines/ibuprofen.
∙ You must wait 4 weeks before/after having filler or Botox around the area to allow it to settle.

OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE GETTING A LIP TATTOO
Picture
Reasons for premature fading
Overusing lip exfoliator / Having lip fillers after having your lips tattooed / Biting your lips and peeling the skin / Fast metabolism / Iron deficiency / Hypo/er thyroidism / Hormone replacement meds / Other daily meds / Smoking / Sunbeds & sunbathing / Not using sun protection / Anti aging products on the lips... the chemicals in these can also react with your lips and change the colour. It is best to go around your lips, not on top of them.
